John Kiki and his Infanta Paintings -
a short talk by Keith Roberts

Thursday 23 September 2021, 17:00 – 18:30

The Yare Gallery, 26 South Quay, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, NR30 2RG

About the event

This richly illustrated talk will cover the origins and development of the Infanta motif that Kiki has been exploring for over 50 years in more than 100 paintings. It will discuss how the motif, derived from Velásquez’s Las Meninas, has been constantly elaborated and reimagined by the artist. After examining the complex history of John’s figurative painting practice and his remarkable reworkings of his own earlier works, it will take a broader look at the long tradition of artists challenging the work of the past by painting variations of earlier works, much as Picasso and Bacon themselves both challenged the work of Velásquez.

Tickets are £10 and can be booked here.
